Preparation
At Home or in Town: Write “Chicken Ranch Mashers” with a permanent marker on a quart freezer bag. Measure out and pack the dry ingredients in the bag. Tuck the wrapped cheese and chicken pouch with the freezer bag. On the Trail or at Camp: Add 2 cups near boiling water, the unwrapped cheese, and half the chicken to the freezer bag. Share the other half of the chicken pouch with a trail mate, or if really hungry add all 7 ounces of chicken to the freezer bag. Stir well, seal tightly, and put in a cozy for 10 minutes. Fluff the potatoes and eat.

Post Pacific Crest Trail follow up: This recipe for Chicken Ranch Mashers was too salty. I didn’t even try to modify the recipe and have it again. The cheese soup mix was probably the source of the excess salt. I also quit buying the Mini Babybel cheeses. Regular blocks of cheddar cheese work just fine. Cheddar sometimes gets a little soft and oily but always tastes fine.

On Trail Test Kitchen: I didn’t care for this one. Too salty.
