Preparation
In Town: Write “Rice Stroganoff” with a permanent marker on a quart freezer bag. Measure out the rice and half a package of dry mushroom gravy mix in to the freezer bag. Tuck the package of beef jerky in with the freezer bag. Pack the oil in a container. On The Trail: Add the beef jerky, the oil, and 1-1/2 cups near boiling water to the freezer bag. Stir well, seal tightly, and put in a cozy for 10 minutes. Fluff the rice and eat.
Notes
I came up with this recipe while on the trail. My food bag was seriously lacking in variety. And so many trail food items and recipes seemed to me to be expensive and heavy. What would be light weight, cheap, different, and easy to find in trail towns? Dances With Lizards had been making meals with dried gravies and instant mashed potatoes. Hmmm. Dried mushroom gravy is cheap. Hmmm. Instant rice. Oh, and beef jerky. That makes a sort of stroganoff. I would find the dried mushroom gravy with the other dry seasoning mixes and gravies in the grocery store. I would buy packages of single servings of beef jerky. They were cheaper than the bigger packages and I didn’t need the extra jerky for snacks. I didn’t eat a lot of jerky on the trail – expensive and rather heavy for the amount of calories, but nice for upping fat calories and flavor in a freezer bag meal.
